Introduced in 1996, the New Balance 580 is a trail running design inspired by the made-in-USA New Balance 585. In 1999, New Balance tapped mita and MadHECTIC for a special SMU project that produced dozens of colorways of the 580 and started to establish the silhouette’s popularity in Japan. The 580 was exclusive to Japan until 2007 when New Balance opened up distribution to the USA and Europe. Key colorways include special-edition models featuring GORE-TEX and collaborations with Stüssy and Palace.
